My studio practice is rooted in play, intuition, and observation of the natural world. I explore themes of transformation, dreams, ecology, and metaphor through ceramics, sculpture, painting, photography, and mixed media. Working in different mediums allows fluidity of thought to translate into the material that is best suited for the idea. My approach to making invites playfulness and curiosity to coexist with technical skill and research.
I am interested in the operation of dreams and the freedom of the subconscious to collapse scale, hybridize figures, and loosen the boundaries between inner and outer worlds. This allows the opportunity to use plants, animals, and insects as aesthetic and conceptual symbols within my work. Human and non human life forms interweave to suggest kinship, rather than hierarchy, with the natural world. Lepidoptera in particular recur throughout my work as symbols of protection, rebirth, and sensuality.
Material exploration is central to my process. In my three dimensional work, I am drawn to surfaces to feel like they are grown rather than fabricated and textures that mimic scales, vines, and flowers. In my two dimensional work, I layer imagery and pattern to build visual rhythms that oscillate between control and improvisation. I use imagination to rehearse alternative ways of relating to our bodies, other species, and the environments we inhabit.
